L'immense majorité des toponymes de Le Poil datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Le Poil, en provençal Lo Pèou, que l'on trouve aussi sous les formes Pel ou Pèn, est attesté en l'an 1056 avec un In Poio dans un Cartulaire de Saint-Victor ; ce passage nous dévoile aussi le nom des paroissiens les plus pieux du Poil.

Nous trouvons encore Le Poil en l'an 1309 avec un Castrum de Pilò dans un hommage rendu par Raymond d'Esparron au Roi Robert le 19 décembre 1309.

Excluant toute racine celtique, ce toponyme dérive du provençal Peu, Pena, dérivant du latin Palus - pieu. Les cartes d'État-Major du XIX° siècle localisent la montagne du Poil.
